When I was first assigned the task to create a Twitter account, follow strangers, and post about educational topics, I was quite nervous. I was uneasy about following strangers because I am hesitant with social media and posting much about myself for all to see. However, once I began following specific educational organizations and leaders, I started to realize that it is a great community and tool for educators to use to share information and lessons, as well as, ask for advice or guidance. I retweeted several posts that were meaningful to me, and the writers of those posts began to follow me. It was very quick to find many people that had similar interests and people that I would like to be connected with. It gave me a sense of feeling connected to other educators throughout the country.
I observed that as I continued to post and follow more people, that I was getting more likes and comments to my posts. The tweets that were recommended for me became more about topics that I posted about, such as relationships with students, mental health, balance, and student well being. There were a few posts that turned into discussions and people shared their experiences and opinions on those topics. This allowed for more in depth conversations and challenged me to reflect on my own thoughts and experiences.
Twitter was very user friendly and gave me a more positive outlook on social media. It allows for short comments or thoughts, and allows for sources to be documented and shared. I like the platform because it provides educators to connect and work together to share ideas about strategies that will work best for our students. Many people were quick to share resources for lessons and differentiated ideas. I didn’t think I would maintain my Twitter account after this class, but over the past several weeks I have become more excited and feel comfortable posting and connecting with other professionals.
